President Akufo-Addo welcoming a member of the AU delegation
Ghana is among countries with the lowest cases of domestic violence in Africa in per capita terms, according to the African Union (AU) Commission for Peace and Security.
In addition, the country has one of the lowest per capita cases in violence on the continent.
This came to light when the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday.
The President expressed delight that the country was making progress in matters of such concerns to the public.
“I don’t know to what extent the Ghanaian people will be reassured by that information (on domestic violence) but it is something that certainly will surprise them,” he said
He said the government attached so much importance to the integration of the continent because the country’s interests were linked to the Africa Agenda.
“Whatever we can do to push forward the claim of the continent, we believe that it will be in our interest to do so,” he said and pledged the country’s commitment towards peace and stability on the continent.
President Akufo-Addo said his administration would always co-operate with the AU and its organs to deal with security and its related challenges on the continent.
“A fit-for-purpose AU is exactly what we need to be able to confront the challenges in this early part of the 21st Century,” he said and noted that the duty of the leaders on the continent was to define a framework to harness the potential of the youth productively.
Mr Chergui, on his part, commended Ghana’s democratic credentials, and described the country as a beacon of stability and democracy.
He commended the policies of President Akufo-Addo, noting that the President’s leadership gave confidence to the socio-economic space in the country.
He said Ghana had made progress in gender equality, climate change, and security and urged the political leadership of the country to continue the good work.
