Dogboe
WBO bantamweight world champion, Isaac Dogboe, is targeting a top three contender for the second defence of his title at the Madison Square Garden in New York on December 8.
Negotiation has begun for his return to the ring after handing Japanese warrior, Hidenori Otake his first knockdown in his first defence since stopping Jessie Magdaleno for the title.
With his new four-year deal with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions, Dogboe, who is known as the ‘Royal Storm’ remains poised for any opponent in the division and is patiently waiting for the next warrior to step up.
Addressing a press conference over the weekend, Dogboe stated a desire to fight Rey Vargas or Danny Roman, holders of the WBC and WBA titles.
That, he explained, would have boosted his unification agenda but while they bid their time, the Ghanaian champion indicated he was ready to fight whoever was thrown at him.
“At that stage (Top 3 ranked boxers), there are no dull opponents. Every opponent here is very tough and chances are even; chances are 50-50. Just as I can go and beat somebody and knock somebody out, the same can be done to me so it requires hard work,” Dogboe said.
He said although the next opponent was yet to be announced, he remained confident December 8 will be a great day and full of fireworks, a situation that has become synonymous with his fights.
Mr Paul Dogboe, father and trainer of the boxer, wondered why credible champions like Vargas and Roman will be dragging their feet over a possible clash after telling everybody they were ready for Isaac.
Paul pointed out that Isaac was ready for any world class boxer in his division at any time because they make sure he was always ready.
“It is hard work that has brought us this far. We make sure Isaac is always in a good condition so that in preparing for fights, we don’t end up breaking the boxer.”
Paul said Team Dogboe was heavily indebted to people that have offered them financial help but was making efforts to settle those debts, adding that, “we have cleared some but hoping to get all cleared by December.”
He called on corporate Ghana to join others like Kempinski Hotel, Silver Star Auto, Midwest and some individuals to use the Isaac Dogboe brand to project the image of Ghana through boxing.
Mike Atamoura, the Matchmaker for the team, said fighting at the Big Apple was a big step in the career of the Ghanaian champion and expressed the need for companies to support to sustain the progress.
