The Netherlands celebrating their emphatic victory over Germany
GERMANY’S dismal run of form continued as rivals Netherlands inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Joachim Low’s side on Saturday.
It was the heaviest defeat ever inflicted on Germany by the Dutch and Netherlands first competitive win over Die Nationalmannschaft since 1992. Although the result could have been very different had Germany taken their chances.
Virgil Van Dijk gave the Dutch the lead in the first half, heading into an empty net after Ryan Babel had hit the bar from a corner kick. From there, though, it was the visitors who dominated, with Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane both spurning golden opportunities to equalise.
Memphis Depay made sure of the points late on, getting on the end of a cross on the rapid counter attack before striking the crossbar as Germany lost all shape and discipline. Georginio Wijnaldum rubbed salt into the wounds in stoppage time, firing past Manuel Neuer to cap a memorable night for Netherlands.
Things have been rather bleak for the Dutch national team in recent years. They have failed to qualify for the last two major tournaments and looked to be at something of a nadir in their recent history.
From the ashes, a new generation is rising. In the likes of Matthijs De Ligt, Denzel Dumfries, Virgil Van Dijk, Marten De Roon, Frenkie De Jong and even the revitalised Depay, Netherlands boast a host of promising youngsters who will surely light up the European game for years to come. – Eurosport
