GIBRALTER created history by winning their first ever competitive match as Armenia suffered a shock 1-0 defeat in the Nations League on Saturday night.
The minnows had lost all of their previous 22 competitive matches – conceding 107 goals and scoring just four – but Joseph Chipolina’s penalty five minutes into the second half moved them level on points with Armenia in Group D4.
Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan was unable to find a way through the resolute Gibraltar defence as they kept a clean sheet at the Hanrapetakan Stadium.
Gibraltar, ranked 198th in the world, received full UEFA membership in May 2013 and competed in the European Championship qualifiers for the first time a year later.
Despite being the smallest UEFA member in terms of both area and population, Julio Cesar Ribas’ side managed to record only their third victory ever, adding to friendly wins over Malta in June 2014 and at home to Latvia in March this year. – Eurosport
