Chelsea players celebrating one of their goals yesterday
A late penalty miss from Riyad Mahrez saw Manchester City fail to capitalise on a chance to beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time since 2003.
City were marginally on top during a dour game but there were few chances for either side as both teams struggled to find their rhythm.
The champions were awarded a penalty in the final stages of the match when Leroy Sane was brought down by Virgil van Dijk.
Despite other players telling him not to Mahrez decided he was taking it and blazed his spot-kick over Alisson’s bar. The result does see City go back up to the top of the table but both teams are now level on 20 points with Chelsea.
Earlier, Eden Hazard was at his irrepressible best as Chelsea recorded a convincing 3-0 win against Southampton at St. Mary’s.
An absolutely toothless home side struggled to contain Chelsea, who literally ran rings around Southampton as they hung back to defend.
The defence was, however, necessary as Chelsea bagged a total of 10 corners in the first half, constantly pressing and constantly looking dangerous against an extremely passive Southampton.
The crowd responded well to a brief spell in possession by the Saints which seemed to give them a bit of confidence, though the wind was knocked out of them by a Danny Ings howler, squandering a great chance from a Ryan Bertrand cross.
At the end of the afternoon, Chelsea coasted to a comfortable win through Hazard (30th), Ross Barkley (57th), Alavaro Morata (90th). – Eurosport
