An excavator operator from Gomoa Nyanyano in the Central Region was remanded in police custody yesterday by the Accra Circuit Court “4” for allegedly robbing a taxi driver at gunpoint.
The accused, Mr. Eric Kwabena Acquah, hired the victim, Mr. Isaac Asante, at about 9:30 p.m. on September 8, 2018, at Kakraba, Kasoa, to take him to Bishop Bonigas’ church at Broadcasting’ Weija, in the Greater Accra Region.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Victor Dosoo, said that when the taxi driver was getting to the church, Kwabena Acquah pulled a shot-gun and ordered him out of the car.
The court heard that the accused further tore the victim’s “T”-Shirt, and used it to tie his (victim’s) hands and legs and finally drove the taxi away.
Mr. Acquah initially pleaded guilty with explanation but the judge, Mrs. Ruby Aryittey, entered a plea of not guilty for him, after listening to his explanation, and remanded him until October 15, 2018, for continuation.
Chief Insp Dosoo said that the victim after his attack reported the matter to the police, who located the car in the house of accused at Gomoa Nyanyano on September 24, 2018.
He said that the police arrested the accused and recovered the ignition key from the pocket of his pair of jeans trousers.
“The original colour of the car had been changed from “Ash and yellow” to ‘black’ colour whilst the original number plate-GW 9939-18, – had also been removed and replaced with a private registration number, GM 3715-12,” the prosecutor said.
According to him (prosecutor) the police managed to retrieve the victim’s bag, which contained his clothes, from the house of the accused.
He said that Isaac Asante identified his attacker during an identification parade and pointed him out to the police as the person who robbed him of his taxi at gunpoint.
