The government yesterday presented assorted items to the Shai Traditional Council at Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region towards the celebration of their annual Ngmayem festival which comes off on Saturday October 6.
The items included a bull, bags of rice, cartons of mineral water, crates of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, a carton of schnapps and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Madam Elizabeth Sackey, presenting the items urged the chiefs and people of the area to maintain the peace they were enjoying.
That, she explained, would further cement the bond among the people as well as unearth the tourism potential of the place.
According to the minister, their forefathers could not have retained the Ngmayem festival if they had not united to leave a befitting legacy for them as the Shai state.
“Festivals are memorable occasions that are used to take stock of past activities as well as plan for the future; it is, therefore, incumbent on the Shai state to unite and rally behind the government to enable it execute its planned programmes and policies for the area,” she said.
Madam Sackey commended the chiefs and people for supporting the assembly’s sanitation effort, and indicated that the Regional Coordinating Council would soon establish an awards scheme to reward assemblies and communities that maintained clean environment.
The acting president of the Shai Traditional Council, Nene Okukrubuor Tei Kwesi AgyemangV, praised the government for the gesture, and assured that the festival would be celebrated in peace.
Similar donations were also made to the Osudoku Traditional Council in support of the celebration of their annual Adegbon festival at Osuwem on Saturday September 29.
