THE Ho Central Prison has taken delivery of eight industrial shoe making machines in addition to one automobile diagnostic-equipment and a vulcanising machine, to support the training of inmates in various vocations.
Mr Victor Agbelengor, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) in-charge of the Volta Region, who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Time in Ho on Tuesday said that the items were supplied to the Ghana Prison Service headquarters in Accra.
He told the Ghanaian Times that a massive number of the convicts had already registered for the training programmes.
Already, DDP Agbelengor said that there was a vibrant beads-bag making industry at the penal centre, whose product could make impact on the international market.
DDP Agbelengor said that the prison currently held 554 inmates, including 99 remand prisoners.
He told the Ghanaian Times that the training programmes were meant to equip the prisoners with skills to enable them to earn a living after serving time in jail, and also facilitate their re-integration into society.
DDP Agbelengor said that some of the apprenticeship programmes would take the trainees three years to complete, “depending on the learner’s ability to grasp the course.”
He said that the prison also offered a training programme for blacksmith apprentices.
The deputy director of prison gave the assurance that the programmes would take off before the end of this year, “and so we are putting our workshops in order now.”
DDP Agbelengor appealed to corporate bodies and public-spirited individuals to support the training programmes in cash and in kind to enable them to run smoothly, saying that an amount of GH¢20,000 was required to fix the workshops for the programmes.
