The second Homowo festival of the chiefs and people of the Adentan Municipality in the Greater Accra Region was on Saturday celebrated with a call on the chiefs to mobilise the people towards the national development agenda of the country.
According to Madam Elizabeth Sackey, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, the government had created the right conditions for grassroots participation in the national development agenda, and the onus was on the citizens to unite to achieve the desired targets.
The event was on the theme, “Homowo; a cultural means for fostering unity in development and sustainable growth.”
Madam Sackey said the Homowo festival had, over the years, been used as a unifying force of the Gas and urged the chiefs to collectively use the occasion as catalyst for the socio-economic advancement of the region.
Madam Sackey said the government acknowledged culture as the foundation of society and assured that everything possible would be done to keep that unique cultural identity.
The festival, she explained, did not only mark the end of hunger but also used as a means of unifying the indigenes to take stock of past activities towards planning for the future.
The deputy Regional Minister charged Ghanaians to support the government’s Free Senior High School policy, which she said was aimed at removing cost barriers of secondary education, adding that “our children must not be deprived of their right to go to secondary school.”
Madam Sackey urged the chiefs to encourage the youth to venture into farming to support the Planting for Food and Jobs programme aimed at the cultivation of raw materials to support the industrialisation policy of the government.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, said the municipality was growing at a very fast rate, and urged for collective efforts to maintain that unity.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Daniel Alex Nii-Noi Adumuah, charged the residents to support the assembly to end open defecation in the area.
According to the MCE, the “Clean Adentan” campaign embarked upon by the assembly would be vigorously enforced to ensure that people who litter and engage in open urination and defecation were dealt with.
Mr Adumuah said the assembly would soon embark on a sensitisation programme to make residents aware of the dangers of environmental pollution for all to abide by the by-laws of the assembly.
