Work on the $84 million Pokuase Interchange at the ACP Junction in the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, to facilitate vehicular movement on the Accra-Nsawam road is progressing steadily.
Currently, drillings for 68 holes to help collate geo-technical information for the erection of columns (piers) for the interchange had been completed.
In addition, about 2.48 kilometres of access roads in the Pokuase township to help create diversions to facilitate vehicular movement on the stretch had been completed, while the construction of access road on the Accra-Nsawam road to pave way for major works on that stretch is on-going.
Additionally, drainage systems for the Awoshie section of the interchange were nearing completion.
Resident Engineer for the Pokuase Interchange and Local Roads, Kwabena Bempong told the Ghanaian Times that the project was six per cent complete as at last month.
He explained that preparatory works for major construction of the project was underway, indicating that the GRIDco 330 KV pylon and 33 and 11 KV lines of the Electricity Company of Ghana were being relocated.
Mr Bempong said as part of the project, 10 kilometres of local roads were being constructed, to help diversions on the stretch, saying “the whole idea is that when the full interchange comes on board during construction we will not unnecessarily inconvenience those on the Accra-Kumasi road.”
He explained that the project management team had put in place an effective traffic plan to facilitate vehicular movement on the stretch.
Mr Bempong disclosed that government through the Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission was making efforts to pay compensation to the individuals who would be affected as a result of the project.
He also hinted that government had secured a land to relocate traders along the construction route, and a water loading bay had been provided for the water tanker operators whose business had been affected at the ACP Junction.
The resident engineer said barring any unforeseen circumstance, the project would be completed on schedule.
The groundbreaking ceremony was performed in July this year for the commencement of the Pokuase Interchange.
The project which is jointly funded by the African Development Bank and the Government of Ghana is expected to be completed in two years, and it is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility along the Nsawam-Accra road.
It consists of the construction of a five-kilometre road from Awoshie to Pokuase, the construction of a two-kilometre road to link the Accra Nsawam highway, and the construction of 10 kilometres of local roads.
The construction which is being undertaken by Messrs China Zhongmei Engineering Company Limited forms part of the Accra Urban Transport Project aimed at promoting sustainable economic growth for people in the area.
