Mr Agyapong
President Nana Akufo-Addo will not win the upcoming general election on a silver platter following some issues at the party’s grassroots level, outspoken member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region has cautioned.
According to him, currently, there is disquiet within the grassroots which may spell doom for the party in the next polls.
“I will not say 2020 is a done deal for President Akufo-Addo, I’m a grassroots person, the party’s grassroots are angry but not saying anything,” Mr Agyapong said.
He lamented that there are a number of party members who are struggling to make ends meet, there are some who need just GH?200 to do business but do not get any support, there’s the need to resource the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) to enable the centre to take care of such people.
Although Mr. Agyapong commended the Akufo-Addo-led administration for handling the economy and implementation of the Free Senior High School policy and other social intervention programmes, he cautioned that the party would struggle to retain power if issues at the grassroots are not resolved amicably.
Asked whether he would seek re-election in the 2020 polls, he hinted that he won’t seek re-election because he would soon be 60 years and wants to live a comfortable life outside politics when his current term ends.
His decision not to seek re-election comes on the back of a pending defamatory case against him in Parliament.
Parliament’s Privileges Committee had recommended that Mr. Agyapong should either be suspended from Parliament or reprimanded for insulting the House.
In excerpts of the committee’s report sighted, it urged the House to adopt its recommendations “by suspending him for the rest of this session or reprimand him”.
Mr. Agyapong reportedly described the House as “useless” for having Osei Kyei- Mensah-Bonsu as its Majority Leader on Accra-based Net2 TV, which belonged to him.
He was responding to comments by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional executive on the exposé by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
These comments compelled Muntaka Mubarak to file a motion to refer him to Parliament’s Privileges Committee.
The committee is yet to give a final ruling on the matter. –citinewsroom.com
