Late Major Maxwell Mahama.
The Second Prosecution Witness (PW2) in the trial of the 14 alleged killers of Major Maxwell Mahama, told the Criminal Court “3” of the Accra High Court during cross-examination yesterday, that she did not tell the Assembly Member of Denyira Obuasi that the army officer was an armed robber.
Madam Esther Tawiah, also known as Maame Bono, said that she rather called Mr. William Baah, first accused, on phone to inform him that a certain man in mufti (civilian attire) and possessing a pistol was moving towards Denyira Obuasi from Diaso, so he (first accused) should check him regarding the spate of robberies in recent times in the area.
When asked by Mr. George Bernard Shaw, Counsel for Mr. Baah (first accused) and five others why she decided to call the accused instead of calling the police, the second prosecution witness said she did not have the telephone number of the police, but knew that of the Assembly Member because she normally bought rice and cooking oil from his store.
Counsel: “What did you tell the Assembly man when you called him?”
Madam Tawiah: “I told him that I have seen a man with a gun who has come to ask me for direction to Denkyira Obuasi and that he should check on him because he has set off to the place.
Counsel: “A day to the murder of Major Mahama some armed robbers attacked a community called “24” and robbed the inhabitants after which they ran into a nearby bush.
Madam Tawiah: “Yes; and I was afraid when I saw the man (reference to Major Mahama) in possession of a gun but did not tell the Assembly man that the said man was an armed robber.”
Another Counsel, Mr. Augustine Gyamfi asked the witness whether she saw his clients, Michael Anim also known as Nana Anim take part in killing Major Mahama but she answered in the negative.
The court presided by Ms. Justice Mariama Owusu discharged Madam Esther Tawiah from the Witness Box and adjourned the case to July 3, and July 10, 2018, for continuation.
