Mr Anthony Karbo,Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways
Mr Anthony Karbo, the Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways yesterday reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), to assist the police in investigations into an alleged fraud case against Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi, the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Lawra was seen in a kaftan and headed to the Financial Forensic Unit (FFU) of the CID around 10:5 a.m.
A source at the Police Public Affairs told the Ghanaian Times in Accra, yesterday, that his (Mr Karbo) statement was taken during the 45 minutes interrogation.
The Police Administration last week officially sought clearance from the leadership of Parliament to release Mr Karbo, to assist in investigations into the Anas undercover investigation into Ghana football.
He was reported to have been mentioned in the video expose, “Number 12” in which the President of the GFA was alleged to have mentioned the names of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahama Bawumia, to defraud some foreign investors.
President Akufo-Addo last week ordered the CID to launch investigations into allegations of fraud against Mr Nyantakyi.
Mr Nyantakyi, who has been President of the country’s football governing body for the past 13 years, has since reported to the CID to assist in investigations. He has been granted police enquiry bail.
Mr Nyantakyi, in the video was reported to have attempted to use the President, the Vice President and other senior government officials to induce some supposed investors into the country and part with the amounts involved.
President Akufo-Addo after watching the video and having consultations, was convinced that a prima facie case had been established for criminal investigations to commence against the GFA boss and, subsequently, ordered the CID to look into the matter.
According to the CID other officials of the GFA indicted in the video would also be invited to assist in investigations.
Mr Nyantakyi has, in the past decade, been linked with several allegations of corruption, with the 2014 World Cup corruption allegation as one of the high profile cases.
However, this is the first time the police has launched a full scale investigations into his conduct.
