The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has provided the Central Zaharial Primary and Junior High School in the Tamale Metropolis with a toilet and other sanitation facilities.
Madam Susan Namondo Ngongi, UNICEF Country Director who handed over the facilities to the school authorities said it was part of UNICEF’s efforts to improve the sanitation conditions in the school.
The toilet and other sanitation facilities were funded by the Netherlands government under a project called Improve Sanitation Access in Urban Ghana.
Madam Ngongi explained that the objective of the project was to improve the health of children in schools and communities.
She explained that providing a decent toilet and sanitation facilities to the school would help to improve academic performance in the school since it would aid retention.
She gave the assurance that UNICEF would continue to support government and other international and local organisations to improve the living conditions of residents, particularly children in rural communities.
