Two people were yesterday swept away by floods in the Tamale metropolis following torrential rains in yesterday morning.
The deceased are a primary two pupil of SDA primary, yet to be identified and a woman named Fari Bapumi, believed to be in her 30s.
The late Bapumi was driving a Prado four wheel vehicle when the floods carried her together with the vehicle off the road into a valley while the school boy was said to have attempted jumping over a gutter but got carried away by the flood waters.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
The heavy rains also cut off many suburbs from the business centre of the metropolis as roads were inundated with flood water.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have been called upon to assist some school children and residents to cross gutters which have overflowed their boundaries.
Several houses and shops in many of the flood prone zones were submerged in the flood leaving the occupants stranded and confused.
At Kalariga Hajia Awabu Alhassan who was seen weeping said her whole house was submerged in water.
She lamented that nothing could be retrieved from the house as nobody could go near the buildings.
Afa Adam Sule another victim told The Ghanaian Times that he was lucky that the rain occurred in the morning when the children and women had already left for school and market respectively.
He said that the havoc caused would have been severe if it had rained in the night as many would have been sleeping.
The rains have caused severe damaged to many roads within the metropolis.
The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed who led an emergency team to some flooded areas was so devastated at the extent of havoc caused by the rains.
He directed officials of NADMO to quickly compile the list of victims and submit same for assistance.
The hardest hit areas included Gumani, Bilpilla, Salaab, Kalariga, Warizehi, Malshegu and Fuo communities.
