The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) Construction Sector has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Youth Inclusive Development Initiative for Employment (YIEDIE) to find innovative ways of using the construction sector to create jobs for the youth.
YIEDIE, a five-year project designed to create economic opportunities in Ghana’s construction sector for economically disadvantaged youth is being implemented by Global Communities in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation whiles the mission of the AGI Construction Sector is to influence the development and growth of the construction industry, through effective stakeholder engagements and policy reform initiatives that will enhance the capacity and competitiveness of the construction sector service providers in Ghana.
Speaking to Times Business after signing the MoU at a stakeholder’s workshop in Accra on Tuesday to develop a local content policy for Ghana’s construction industry, the chairman of the AGI Cosntruction Sector, Mr Rockson Kwesi Degbegah said the MoU was about youth empowerment through the use of the construction sector.
He said under the MoU YIEDIE would support AGI to create an enabling environment for the construction industry.
Mr Dogbegah also said under the MoU the youth from now to 2020 would be trained to gain employable skills in the construction industry.
The chairman expressed gratitude to YIEDIE for the support to AGI to build a vibrant construction industry.
YIEDIE Project Director, Mrs Kafui Vera Mills-Odoi said the YIEDIE Project sought to train the youth with employable skills for the youth in carpentry, masonry among others.
She said more than 27,000 youth would be trained between now till 2020 with 40 per cent of the trainees being women.
Mrs Mills-Odoi said the objective of the project was to create employment for the youth between 17 and 23 years in the construction industry.
“Our vision is to build a solid nation with the youth in the construction industry,” Mrs Mills-Odoi said.
The YIEDIE Project director explained that a study conducted by her outfit revealed that the construction industry offered an avenue for the youth to be employed.
Mrs Mills-Odoi said the construction industry between now and 2020 was envisaged to create about 700,000 jobs.
She opined that the youth could not be trained and left alone hence the MoU with the AGI till 2020 to create opportunity for the youth to secure jobs.
