The Ghana Police Service has advised the public, especially public sector workers, not to share their personal details on phone and other social media platforms.
A statement signed by Director-General/Public Affairs, Chief Inspector David Fianko-Okyere, said fraudsters, posing as staff of Controller and Accountant General’s Department, were targeting public sector workers.
“These fraudsters place telephone calls to unsuspecting public sector workers requesting their biometric social security numbers for a purported account reconciliation.” it indicated.
According to the police, in the course of communication, the fraudster demanded unspecified amount from the workers, and truncated communication afterwards.
The statement said recipients of the fraudulent calls were threatened with stoppage of their salaries if they failed to comply with their demands.
The police service has therefore asked the public to be wary of such fraudulent activities as well as report any suspicion to the nearest police station.
