Thirty-two out of the 58 persons arrested for allegedly killing Major Maxwell Adam Mahama at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region, in May 29, 2017, would stand trial.
The prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) George Amegah, told the Accra Central District Court “3,” yesterday that apart from the 32, who would be prosecuted, investigations were still on-going to establish the complicity or otherwise of the rest of the accused and asked for an extension of time to amend the charge sheets.
However, the presiding judge, Mr. Ebenezer Kwaku Ansah, directed the police to send the 17-year-old boy, Ebenezer Asamoah, who is among the alleged killers, to a Borstal Home, for safety and thoroughly investigated, and come out with his correct age for the court to take a decision.
Meanwhile, all the accused have been remanded in police custody until July 6, 2017, without taking their plea.
According to the police, there was the fear that if those who would not be prosecuted were released, they might not go back to their homes, but might take refuge elsewhere taking cognizance of places like Asankragua in the Western Region as well at Drobo and Takyiman in the Brong Ahafo Region.
People who went to the Court to catch glimpse of the accused, hurled insults at them, especially the women, who were seriously cursing the alleged culprits saying “God will punish you wicked people”, “thunder will strike all of you” “may your souls be tormented”.
The late Major Mahama was killed by a mob, who mistook for an armed robber when he was posted to Denkyira-Obuasi to undertake official assignment, but met his untimely death.
