Founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerry John Rawlings has admonished executives and members of the party to pay the cost of party unity ahead of the 2020 elections if they desire to win back power.
He mentioned the ingredients of the price as truthfulness, integrity and sincerity, urging them to do away with the propaganda way of doing politics as they face opposition in preparation for future elections.
Addressing the 25th anniversary rally of the party at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, former President Rawlings appealed to all to live in unity which is the prerequisite to staying focused and winning back power but must be done devoid of peddling falsehood.
He restated facts that accounted for the disgraceful defeat of the party in the December 7, 2016 polls including heightening corruption, greed and selfishness under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama.
These he observed were in variance to the values upheld by the NDC in concert with the ideals of June 4 which celebrated its 38th Anniversary.
Former President John Dramani Mahama on his part, appealed to members of the party to stop apportioning blames over who is responsible for the party’s defeat at the polls, indicating that the blame game is inimical to the party’s resolve to win back power in 2020.
He reiterated that as the leader who led the party then in government to a defeat in the last elections he accepted all blame for the outcome.
“I have accepted all blame as a leader of the party and I am confident and pray that after the reorganisation we shall win as a party,” he said.
According to him, what matters in life is not how many times one falls but “how you survive and make new impact” and appealed to party members to “stop crying over spilt milk and instead think of how to get new milk to enjoy.”
Other leading members of the party in attendance were the general secretary Asiedu Nketia, the deputy general secretary, Koku Anyidoho, the chairman, Kofi Portuphy, former ministers of state and parliamentarians both sitting and former and a host of others.
After the party’s defeat in the 2016 elections there has been some acrimonious exchanges and blame game among some party members.
However, leaders of the party believe that by putting in place a committee, led by Professor Kwasi Botchwey to look at what caused the defeat, the party is gradually riding the storm. –mynewsgh.com
