A young man believed to be in his early thirties was on Thursday shot dead by the Police at Tema Community Nine, following an exchange of fire with the police.
A search on the unidentified suspect revealed an MP 22 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunitions in the chamber,
The police also found 12 live ammunitions in the pocket of the deceased, and four spent shells were also retrieved.
The Police also impounded a KIA saloon car and two motor bikes.
According to the Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Benefoh Darkwah, at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, police patrol team encountered some young men smoking dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at Community Nine at ‘Top Ten Club’ near Banners of Grace Ministries.
He said when the team stopped to interrogate the group, a young man among them pulled a revolver and shot twice, hitting the thigh of a Police Constable, and the Constable also returned fire, which hit the neck and shoulder of the deceased.
ASP Darkwah said the Police Constable and the suspect were rushed to the Tema General Hospital, where the suspect was declared dead and the Police Constable treated and discharged.
The body of the deceased has been sent to the Police Hospital Mortuary pending autopsy.
ASP Darkwah said the Regional Command has commenced full scale investigation into the incident, adding that “we want to take this opportunity to assure the general public that, the police will continue to maintain peace, law and order in the metropolis.”
