Mr. Kwame Asiamah – Youth and Sports Minister
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah has identified the establishment of the National Sports Fund (NSF) as the solution to the myriad problems in the administration and development of sports in Ghana.
In direct reference to a similar fund (GETFUND) in the educational sector, Mr. Asiamah said that was the surest way to go considering the immense benefit to be derived from it.
Mr. Asiamah made the comment at Saturday’s 42nd MTN-SWAG Awards ceremony held at the Banquet Hall, State House in Accra.
The event which was graced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo saw former Ghana international, Anthony Baffoe crowned as Sports Personality of the Year after beating competition from Professional Boxer of the Year award winner, Emmanuel Tagoe.
Responding to a number of concerns raised by the President of SWAG, Kwabena Yeboah, the Youth and Sports minister noted that this current administration was bent on introducing the best policies geared at giving sports promotion a boost.
“This administration is committed to providing reliable source of funding for sports. GETFUND is working for the education sector and we believe that the establishment of a fund for sports will go a long way to solve a number of our issues, majority of which border on finance.”
He disclosed that the refurbishment of the nation’s sports facilities, especially the Accra and Kumasi Sports Stadia remain top priority areas the ministry would consider following recommendations to close them.
Mr. Asiamah encouraged SWAG to throw more light on how to use sports to achieve individual and global development goals, notably the sustainable development goals of the United Nations (UN).
He also appealed to the media organization to expose the darker side of sport by revealing some of the ills that challenge the integrity of sport.
“In so doing, we shall succeed in using the overwhelming positive values and benefits of sports to mitigate, if not eliminate, the negative traits bedeviling the beautiful image of sports.”
