A 33-year-old woman who appeared before a high court in Kumasi,
burst into uncontrollable tears, after she was acquitted and discharged by the court for murdering her ex-husband in 2014.
Akosua Ode had pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder, and had been in
prison custody for the past three years for allegedly killing the husband, Kofi
Nketia.
But, at the sitting of the court, presided over by Justice Charles Adjei Wilson,
on Monday, Ode, a second-hand clothes seller, walked out a free woman as the seven-member jury handed her a unanimous verdict of not guilty of
murdering her 45-year-old husband.
It was quite a scene as she could not control herself from crying and asking the prison wardens whether it was true she had been freed.
.
Four principal witnesses in the case, including Dr Osei Sampene, a
pathologist of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, testified at the court.
State Attorney, Nana Konadu Owusu Banahene, told the court that, Nketia was a trader, who lived at AtwimaTrebuom in the Ashanti Region.
The court heard that Nketia and Ode were a married couple, but the relationship turned sour, and came to an end in March, 2014, and the man left for Mankranso.
Nana Banahene said on March 18, 2014, Ode went to Nketia and demanded Gh¢1,500, which the man owed her.
According to the state attorney, when Ode entered Nketia’s room,
another woman, called, Abena Serwaah, ran out of the room virtually naked screaming that Ode had stabbed Nketia with a knife.
The court heard that when the son of the landlord, Isaac Frimpong (a witness in the case) heard the alarm, he rushed into Nketia’s room.
Nana Banahene said the witness found Ode sitting on top of the man with a
Blood-stained knife in one hand and the other hand held onto his neck and shouting, “I will kill you” in the presence of the witness.
Frimpong, the prosecution said, took the knife from Ode and
rushed Nketia to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was
pronounced dead the next day after he bled from the wound on his
stomach.
