President Akufo-Addo presenting the prize for the overall-best first year student to Brandniece Okity. Looking on is Dr. Opoku Prempeh
President Nana Akufo-Addo on Saturday joined the people of Mafi-Kumase for the 33rd anniversary and second speech and prize giving day celebration of the Mafi-Kumase Senior High Technical School in the Central Tongu District, of the Volta Region.
The event was under the theme: Raising an incorruptible generation: The role of quality free secondary/technical Education.
President Akufo-Addo who was the guest of honour urged students to hold onto their aspirations and study diligently towards a bright future.
He said that apart from such challenges as the lack of adequate infrastructural facilities, and over-crowding in the dormitories, every second cycle institution had a peculiar challenge facing it.
However, Nana Akufo-Addo said that those challenges must not take away the aspirations of young people.
“Many of the deprived schools have produced many great personalities than some enriched schools,” said Nana Akufo-Addo.
He touched on the importance of technical education and said that it was a shame that for far too long, schools offering technical programmes were deprived of well-equipped workshops and laboratories to smoothly implement the courses.
“We need skilled people to modernise our country, and every child has a talent we must bring out for that purpose,” the President stated.
Nana Akufo-Addo then pledged to provide a workshop complex for the Mafi-Kumase Senior High Technical School, and a new school bus to transform the institution.
He also directed the Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh to take urgent steps to clear the school’s accumulated water and electricity bills which stood at GH¢ 43,500.
He insisted that every Government programme required skilled people, saying science and technological skills were also vital for the success of government’s One District One Factory vision.
The President, therefore, called for a change in the country’s education system to place greater emphasis on skills training.
“We will be unfit to govern if we are grounded in the area of science and technology because science and technology rule our lives,” Nana Akufo-Addo added.
He paid glowing tribute to the founding fathers of the school, and also commended the Mafi-Kumase Senior High Technical School for it high standard of discipline which he said was readily evident in the smart turn-out of the students and the school’s army cadet corps.
The president later dug the earth to mark the commencement of work on a new administration block for the school.
Earlier, the headmaster, Mr. Courage Metek,u said that the school which took off on a humble note in 1983 with 70 boys, including six girls could now boast of a boarding status with 722 students, including 422 girls.
