Retired Custom Officers Association (RECOA) have appealed to the government to tap into their wealth of knowledge and experience for the benefit of the country.
“Government imposes powers on us to enable us to collect trillions of cedis to meet government expenditure, but as soon as we retired we are rendered powerless and made to waste,” the RECOA noted.
The president of the RECOA, Nene Samuel Aggudey, expressed this sentiment yesterday in Accra at the launch of the 10th anniversary of the association under the theme, “Ten years of RECOA: Challenges and the way forward.”
The association seeks to, among other objectives; promote the welfare of its members and to encourage the use of their professional capacities by organisations and institutions.
Nene Aguddey observed that retired custom officers had been “marginalised for so long,” and urged the government to take “a second look at their plight.”
“It is an indisputable fact that some retirees from the security services and other para-military services, ex-bankers or accountants are at times re-deployed to become chief executive officers of other institutions or placed on boards of some institutions, but ex-commissioners of customs are denied such chances,” Nene Aguddey said.
He urged the members of the association to aspire to live enviable and respectable lives saying “we members of RECOA made several mistakes during our working period….let’s open a new chapter for excellence and repentance.”
He appealed to the government to construct a clinic to cater for their needs, a permanent meeting place, means of transport adding “incapacitated and bedridden members are issues on the time table.”
The Commissioner of the Custom Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Isaac Crentsil who performed the launch on behalf of the Commissioner-General of the GRA, commended the association for useful contribution to the country.
He said the GRA recognised them as vibrant partners in tax administration in the country, and pledged the support of the authority to the welfare of RECOA and also urged them to be innovative in addressing their challenges.
