The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has urged queenmothers and women groups to help tackle sexual and domestic abuse of women in the country.
Mrs Akufo-Addo made the call at the 23rd District 18 Conference of Zonta International in Accra yesterday, to celebrate the achievements of the club in the West African Sub-region.
The three-day conference is on the theme: “Empowering women through safe motherhood and advocating against teenage pregnancy and early marriage of girls”.
Mrs Akufo-Addo said there were disturbing reports of young girls being trafficked from the West African sub-region to the Middle East, to work as domestic helpers under very harsh conditions.
The First Lady commended Zonta International for helping to improve the lives of women and children.
She also urged the group to support the campaign against obstetric fistula in Ethiopia and Liberia, and child marriage in Ghana.
Mrs Akufo-Addo pledged to support women living under deplorable conditions, improve child nutrition, and fight against malaria in Ghana.
The Zonta International President District 18 Governor, Madam Anne Marie French-Codjoe, said the group in 2012 launched a campaign to end violence against women.
The Chief Executive Officer of the African Women Development Fund, Ms Theo Sowa, noted that women were capable of improving their socio-economic condition.
She urged women groups to help fight for gender equality to ensure socio-economic and political growth.
The Zonta International president-elect, Susan Van Bassewitz, lauded the club for championing the cause of women in the country.
