The United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Christian Evans-Klock, has commended Ghana for her commitment in addressing issues affecting women in the country.
According to her, Ghana has championed the provision of education in the public sector, which had helped in protecting the rights of women and the girl-child.
Mrs. Evans-Klock made the commendation when four students of the Alpha Beta School presented artefacts and drawings on the daily activities of women in the informal sector, to her in Accra yesterday, which was also in commemoration of the International Day of Women.
The day is celebrated every March 8, to recognise the achievements of women with regards to national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political divisions.
Mrs. Evans-Klock stressed the need for vigorous advocacy to end child marriage and other forms of abuses against women in the country.
She said even though, women representation in Ghana’s Parliament and other positions is low, there has been improvement over the years, adding that women now occupied key positions in Ghana.
Mrs. Evans-Klock urged government to improve and build more vocational institutions to train women in their various fields of work, to enable them to acquire skills and work to earn a living to improve their standards of living.
She commended women, especially single mothers, for their immense contributions to national development.
Christabel Mireku, a student from Alpha Beta School, appealed to the public to accord women more recognisition and respect.
She said “women need helping hands in the daily struggle to lessen the hardship they go through in making ends meet.”
