The Ghana Police Service has arrested key suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of the father-in-law of Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of GOLDBOD, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation in Kumasi.
Mr Andrews Amankwaa Karikari died on February 18, 2026, after suffering gunshot wounds during a violent robbery at his residence at Uhim Amanfrum on February 10. He was the father of Irene Amankwaa Karikari, wife of Sammy Gyamfi.
Addressing the media on Monday, February 23, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Arthur Osei-Akoto, confirmed the arrests and provided details of the operation.
“Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police activated a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, and the CID Anti-Robbery Unit,” he stated.
He added: “Through sustained surveillance, technical intelligence and targeted operations, we have successfully dismantled a very dangerous carjacking syndicate known as the Tukum Syndicate.”
According to DCOP Osei-Akoto, between February 18 and 22, four key members of the syndicate were arrested in separate intelligence-led operations across Kumasi and its environs.
“One suspect sustained gunshot wounds during an operation and was later pronounced dead at the hospital,” he disclosed.
The first breakthrough came on February 18 with the arrest of Akwesembenu, a 47-year-old farmer, who was found in possession of the deceased victim’s Samsung mobile phone.
“His arrest provided the initial breakthrough in the investigations,” the Regional Commander explained.
On February 19, Bashiri Tanko, alias “Tiki,” aged 33, was arrested at Atunsu in Kumasi. Police investigations linked him to car smuggling activities in Tarkwa and around the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology area.
“Intelligence suggests he was sidelined from the most recent fatal operation due to an internal financial dispute within the syndicate,” DCOP Osei-Akoto revealed.
Another suspect, Kwejo Amponsa, alias “Kamakazi,” aged 35, was arrested on February 21 at Hereso near Buankra.
“His interrogation provided critical intelligence linking the syndicate to multiple violent robberies involving Toyota Hilux vehicles in Kumasi,” he said.
The alleged syndicate leader, Eric Njiduku, aged 42, was shot during a police operation on February 22 at about 11:00 p.m. and later died at the hospital.
“Items recovered from him include a Bruni Mod 84 pistol, eight rounds of live ammunition, a tracking detection device, four vehicle documents and a Toyota Corolla S,” the Commander noted. “The recovered firearm is currently undergoing forensic and ballistic examination to determine its linkage to various crime scenes.”
Later that same night, at about 11:30 p.m., Emmanuel Kwame Apiah, alias “Taller,” aged 38, was arrested at Denyame, Kumasi.
“Investigations indicate that he acted as the syndicate’s driver during the fatal Uhim Amanfrum robbery,” DCOP Osei-Akoto said.
Police said preliminary findings link the suspects to the February 10 robbery during which Mr Andrews Amankwaa Karikari was shot and his Toyota Hilux, registration number GN 647–25, stolen.
The group is also suspected to be behind a separate robbery at Kronum, where another victim was fatally shot and a Toyota Hilux belonging to the Ghana National Association of Teachers was stolen.
“The syndicate specialised in targeting Toyota Hilux vehicles,” the Police Commander stressed. “The group conducted pre-surveillance on victims and, in recent operations, escalated to the use of lethal force to facilitate vehicle theft.”
He further disclosed that the suspects have admitted to multiple robbery operations across Tarkwa and Kumasi and have provided intelligence on the movement of stolen vehicles along the Northern Border Corridor.
“The suspects are currently in police custody and will soon be arraigned before court,” he stated.
DCOP Osei-Akoto also revealed that some members of the gang had long been on the police wanted list.
“These suspects have been on the wanted list of the Central Regional Police Command but escaped arrest anytime there was an attempt to apprehend them,” he said.
Reaffirming the Service’s commitment, he concluded: “The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in dismantling violent criminal networks operating within the Ashanti Region and beyond.”
