Soldiers in Benin Announce Ouster of President Talon

Soldiers in the West African nation of Benin announced on national television that they have toppled President Patrice Talon and taken control of the country.

According to a BBC report, the French Embassy in Cotonou issued an alert confirming gunfire near the president’s residence. The soldiers, who appeared on state TV, declared the suspension of the constitution, the closure of all land borders, and the shutdown of the country’s airspace.

In their broadcast, the mutineers said a Military Transition Council will now steer state affairs under the leadership of Lieutenant-Colonel Tigri Pascal.

President Talon, 67, was expected to leave office next year after completing his second and final term.
