The Black Stars of Ghana have been drawn alongside the Three Lions of England, Croatia, and Panama in Group L ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ghana, widely seen as an underdog, will face tough competition from these European sides, including its former colonial master, England. The Three Lions have appeared in the World Cup 17 times and are tipped as one of the tournament favourites, currently ranked fourth in the world. Croatia—the “Checkered Ones” holds the tenth spot, while Central American side Panama, known as the “Reds,” is ranked 31st, and Ghana sits at 72nd
Last month, the Black Stars participated in the Kirin Challenge Cup friendlies, losing 2-0 to Japan’s Blue Samurai at the Toyota Stadium and 1-0 to South Korea, the Tiger of Asia. Despite these setbacks, Ghana is set to compete with a youthful squad eager to make an impact in the upcoming Mundial.
Next year’s tournament will feature a record 48 teams in the expanded edition. The draw was conducted with the help of former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, setting the stage for a highly anticipated World Cup in North America.
