A 38-year-old driver and customer of Asuogyaman Company Limited at the Timber Market, in Accra, has been sentenced to 30 days imprisonment for stealing plywood valued at GH¢2,700 from the company’s warehouse.
The convict, Kojo Addo, was handed the sentence by the Dansoman Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
In delivering the judgment, the court considered that Addo was a first-time offender who did not waste the court’s time. It also took into account the fact that the stolen 20 pieces of 6mm plywood had been retrieved in good condition.
Addo, who is not a staff member of Asuogyaman Company Limited, but a contract driver working under a “work and pay” arrangement with another company, told the court he earns GH¢300 daily and is a father of three-year-old and one-year-old children.
The incident occurred on March 20, 2025 at around 10:30 a.m. when Addo, who frequently visited the company’s warehouse to load goods for customers, took advantage of a quiet moment to steal the plywood. He hid the items in a nearby house for later collection.
The act was captured by CCTV cameras installed at the warehouse, leading to his arrest and detention at the James Town Police Station.
During police investigations, Addo admitted to the crime in his cautioned statement and attributed his actions to economic hardship. He also led investigators to the location where the plywood was hidden.
The case was prosecuted by Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko, while the complainant, Eric Badu Odoi, a supervisor at the company, reported the incident after the missing items were discovered and reviewed on CCTV.
Addo was initially remanded into custody ahead of his sentencing, which was delivered yesterday.
