The legal proceedings surrounding the murder of investigative journalist, Ahmed Suale, have taken a new turn, as prosecutors have amended the charges against the primary suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye.
He now faces two counts of abetment to commit a crime and murder, replacing the initial single charge of murder.
At his latest appearance before the Madina District Court, Owusu Koranteng was remanded once again, with the court rejecting a bail request from his defense lawyer, Kofi Essel.
Prosecutor Chief Inspector Nana Afua Bamfoa Bamfo argued against bail, citing ongoing investigations. The prosecution detailed that both the accused and Ahmed Suale were former colleagues at Tiger Eye P.I, the investigative firm led by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
It was revealed that the accused had a personal connection with the deceased and his family before the tragic event.
Tensions reportedly escalated in June 2018 after former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, aired Ahmed Suale’s images on his television network, urging the public to attack him. According to Chief Inspector Bamfo, Suale later confronted Owusu Koranteng via WhatsApp, suspecting that he had leaked the images to Agyapong.
On January 16, 2019, Ahmed Suale was gunned down at Madina after his photos were made public. Investigators claim that Owusu Koranteng, who was familiar with Suale’s residence and movements, allegedly guided two unidentified accomplices—who remain at large—to the location where they carried out the attack.
Further evidence reportedly places the accused near Suale’s residence at the time of the murder. It is also alleged that after the crime, Owusu Koranteng fled Madina, arriving at his Amasaman residence by 11:15 p.m. before leaving for the United Kingdom.
Investigators state that the accused evaded multiple police summonses and even altered his identity using another person’s National ID to change his SIM card registration. However, following his return to Ghana, authorities tracked him down and arrested him at Amasaman on March 15 this year.
In court, the prosecution reported that Owusu Koranteng admitted to knowing Ahmed Suale, visiting Kennedy Agyapong, and taking photographs with the deceased, but denied involvement in leaking the images. Meanwhile, law enforcement continues efforts to locate other suspects linked to the murder. The case has been adjourned to April 17, 2025.
