Three land guards – Anthony Barima, 65, Sulemana Sally, scrap dealer, 40 and Sani Bawah Awungani, scrap dealer, 39 are being tried on two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and one count of threat of death. The accused persons were reported to the police by one Sarah Forkuo, an estate developer.
According to case brief, read to the court, which was presided over by Mr Emmanuel Essandoh, in the year 2017, the complainant assisted Fortress Capital Company to acquire four plots of land at Dzornaman, East Legon, in Accra and completed all necessary documents covering the land in the year 2019.
The fact read by Inspector Eric Pobee indicated that after the land had been legally acquired, two persons having detected that the complainant was out of the jurisdiction, encroached on the land, using land guards.
The development compelled the complainant to return to Ghana. He said on May 7, 2021 the complainant received information that there were a number of people suspected to be land guards on the land, which the complainant and his brother, a witness in the case, quickly rushed to the land and found the accused persons there.
Inspector Pobee said Awungani was found holding a cutlass and dared anyone that tried to come near the land. As a result, the Police Team from the Counter Terrorism Unit was called and the accused persons were arrested and brought to the Regional CID Headquarters.
In their respective caution statements, they told the Police that both Barima and Awungani were lodging in a two bed room apartment demolished on the land in question, but Sally was a visitor to Awungani.
The accused person went on to state that on the day in question, they decided to go and have some rest under a tree on the land, where they were arrested.
Meanwhile, Inspector Pobee indicated that investigation has revealed that before the complainant and her Fortress Capital company obtained ownership of the land, the former landlords – Grantors – had obtained possession and demolishing orders from High Court with Suit No: AL\25\14 dated August 25, 2016.
He said all unauthorised buildings on the land including a storey building Barima was then lodging in, but A1on seeing the absence of the complainant went and rebuilt two-bed rooms structure at the far end of the land.
The prosecutor said A1 engages the services of land guards to prevent complainant and her company from developing the land.
In another development, a bread seller has been granted GH?80, 000.00 bail for not rendering account and allegedly pocketing an amount of GH?73,000.00 belonging to a company – Supreme State Limited – producers of A1 bread.
The suspect, Peter Sarkodie, was supplied quantities of bread to sell in 2019 at the cost of GH?73,000.00 but never rendered account to the company.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector John Gohoho told the court, presided over by Mrs Priscilla Mireku-Daapah yesterday, that the complainant, Stephen Offei, who is an officer of the company after realising that the accused person had refused to render account, reported the matter to the police.
He said the accused person admitted in his caution statement that he has stolen the money, but has managed to pay back GH?5,000.00.
