The contest as to who becomes the next mayor of Kumasi is becoming keener and keener, with media reports suggesting that nine aspirants have declared their quest for the post and have already been vetted by a committee put in place by the national executives of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
Osei Assibey Antwi, Ing Nana Poku Agyemang, Samuel Pyne, Kofi Owusu Boateng, Kwabena Manu, Kennedy Kwasi Kankan, Nana Kofi Senya, Kusi Boafo Thomas and Collins Owusu Amankwah are the contestants for the seat.
But before President Akufo-Addo makes the final decision as to who should represent him in the Ashanti Regional capital, our correspondents report that the residents have expressed varied opinion on the issue.
Whilst some believe a fresh hand is needed to steer the affairs of Kumasi, others are of the opinion that the incumbent should continue. Those who are against the retention of the current MCE have taken the decision because of the alleged insecurity and failure to properly plan the development of the metropolis. They mentioned lack of adequate street lights and sanitation challenges among others.
These varied positions notwithstanding, it is the opinion of The Chronicle that it is only the president that can determine the fate of all the nine contestants. It was the president who appointed the incumbent and based on his assessment, he (president) can tell whether he qualifies for the position again or not.
Similarly, President Akufo-Addo, as a party man, might have worked with and, therefore, knows the background of the other contestants. If any of them is ahead of the incumbent, he is the only person who can tell.
The Chronicle does not, therefore, support accusations and counter accusations going on among the nine contestants, to the extent that the incumbent is threatening legal action against one of his opponents.
This is the time The Chronicle expects the contestants to come out with fantastic ideas and manifestos that would help transform Kumasi into a modern city and not the trading of insults.
