GOLD FIELDS Ghana Limited, Damang mine, has partnered the Nana Abena Kunadjoa Foundation to impart skill training to females in the catchment communities of the mining company.
The partnership has resulted in 40 females who could not pursue further education after writing their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) acquiring basic skills liquid soaps, hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol making.
The training programme was on the theme ‘Empowering women with skills for a better living’.
Welcoming the participants to the training programme, the Community Affairs Manager of Damang mines, Abdul Razak Yakubu, told the participants the skill training programme fell within the vision of the company to offer a helping hand to its host communities to acquire skill training.
“This is what Damang mine has looked forward to partner a programme like this for the total development and empowerment of our communities”.
A reason, he said, the company had decided to partner the Foundation to give skill training to the selected 40 participants, hoping the training programme would not be nine day wonder.
The Community Affairs Manager disclosed that the first three participants who would come up tops in the skill training programme would be offered a seed capital from the company to aid them set up businesses.
The Initiator of the training programme, Nana Abena Kunadjoa II, Queenmother of Wassa Fiase Stool said she decided to embark on the skill training programme, especially for girls, so that they could depend on it for a living.
According to her a number of girls are roaming in the traditional area because they claim they do not have helpers to help pursue further education hence her decision to support.
She said there was no reason to fail the youth in the area of skill training programme particularly for those who could not further their education. She expressed the hope that the skill training programme would be extended to all the communities under Wassa Fiase as a means of empowering the females.
The Kunadjoa Foundation was established two years ago and has the vision to impact the communities with skill training programme.
