The philanthropic arm of Melcom Group of Companies, Melcom Care Foundation has observed the World Menstrual Hygiene Day by extending support to needy female school going pupils and students in the regular maintenance of menstrual hygiene.
The Group, in collaboration with Touching the Lives of Girls Foundation International, has donated 100 cartons of sanitary pads to schools in the Volta and Ashanti region.
Speaking at the event, which was held yesterday at the Melcom Head Office in Accra, to mark the day, Mr. Godwin Avenorgbo, Director of Communications, Melcom Group of Companies mentioned that the foundation is aware that in many areas in our rural communities, “the lack of sanitary pad promotes the use of unhygienic materials by young school going girls”.
Again, “many girls absent themselves from school during the period of their menstrual cycle and quite a number suffer the embarrassment of soiling their school uniforms through leakage and many other avoidable experiences not worth recounting here”, he noted.
The Melcom Care Foundation accepts without question that the Female Menstrual Cycle is God’s design for the full attainment of quality female reproductive health which cannot be ignored regardless of the financial status of the individual or family and hence initiative, the Director of Communications said.
Mr. Godwin further indicated that “Melcom Care is of the hope that this can relieve the hardship and expense of acquiring Sanitary Pads by needy school going children with its expected impact namely build confidence in the young female, enable regular school attendance without break, avoidance of embarrassing experiences which make girls shy away from public appearances, discourage the use of unhealthy materials which are harmful and to promote over all personal health and quality living.”
Nana Ama Adutwumwaa, CEO of Touching Lives of Girls Foundation International, also spoke on how improper menstrual hygiene was affecting the girl child.
She said it was an ordeal she has experienced before which wasn’t so pleasant and that’s why she and her team has taken it upon themselves to donate sanitary pads to the girl child.
She mentioned that they are grateful to Melcom for collaborating with them since it would enable them reach out to girls in the hinterlands and rural areas and not only in the big cities and towns.
