A Senior Clinical Engineering Manager at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Emmanuel Wireko-Brobby, has lamented over the lack of adequate funds to enable him produce some medical equipment locally.
He complained that the lack of support from the government and corporate bodies after the production of some medical equipment initially, stalled due to lack of funding.
Ing. Wireko-Brobby, who was adjudged KATH’s 2019 overall best staff, has gone into the production of medical items like; Snellen Viewer, X-ray Viewer, Radiant Warmer, Drip-Stand, Patient-Bed, Leg-Crutch, Prosthetic arm and leg, Theatre lamp, Wheelchair and Water-Tester among others.
Lamenting on his predicament, the clinical engineering manager stated in an interview with The Chronicle that it is sad and disheartening to invest heavily in research to come out with outstanding inventions and innovations as his quota to national development only for the initiative to be stalled for lack of funding and support.
According to him, all efforts to expand the production of the above-stated medical equipment came to nothing because government does not seem interested in either supporting the venture or assisting Ghanaians as pertains in the advanced countries.
Inj. Wireko-Brobby said after the first batch of WirBtech (the brand name of his products), he continued his research work in other areas, including power generators, with an ultimate aim of finding a lasting solution to “Dumsor”.
He lamented that after 70% production of Prosthetic arm and leg, everything has came to an abrupt end due to lack of support.
The aggrieved engineer disclosed that he plans to relocate to any country ready to appreciate and assist in expanding his invention.
He argued that Ghana seems to focus more on natural resources at the expense of technological advancement, which is now the new world order.
To Inj. Wireko-Brobby, Ghana has failed to pay serious attention to the key areas which have made advanced countries what they are today.
The clinical engineer wondered why the “no bed syndrome should exist in our hospitals in this present dispensation, when such medical equipment could easily be made by him.
“Ghana must start producing what we consume instead of always importing from abroad, else we will live to witness total collapse of our economy” and he reminded policy makers and officialdom that, “Domestication is the key to our hydra-headed problems”.
