The Tema Regional Police Command is investigating a case in which the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) 33kV cable connecting a pylon near GRIDCo’s head office was set ablaze by some unknown persons last Thursday.
Chief Inspector Stella Dzakpasu, the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), told The Chronicle on the telephone that at about 2pm of May 20, this year, Isaac Collins Aidoo, the Chief Technician of ECG, Tema Regional office, accompanied by Alexander B. Osew, a co-worker, went to the Community One District Police Station to report that at about 3:40 am that day, someone set the company’s 33kv electricity cable connected to a pylon (high tension) ablaze.
The state’s installation, adjacent GRIDCo and close to the Tema Oil Refinery, is fenced with a wire mesh.
She said a security guard at GRIDCo spotted smoke emanating from the pylon on the company’s CCTV and quickly informed the fire service department, stationed in the company, whose swift response saved the situation.
When the police visited the crime scene, Chief Inspector Dzakpasu said they detected that the perpetrator cut part of the wire mesh fence before getting access to the scene to burn the pylon. There was also burnt debris of car tyre at the foot of the pylon, indicating that the perpetrator used the vehicle tyre to burn the pylon.
“The police is investigating and shall be on the heels of the criminal, but while at that, anyone with credible information leading to the person(s) who committed the alleged arson should contact the Tema Police on 0542719093 or 18555,” to volunteer information, she said.
