The contractor working on a concrete drainage system on the major street of Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, Kappa K Construction Limited, has apologised to motorists, drivers and residents for the delay in executing the project, which is 99 percent complete.
The Ministry of Works and Housing awarded the GH¢ 190,000.00 contract in March, 2019 and was expected to be completed in November same year.
Managing Director of the company, Mr Kingsley Friar, admitted that though work had delayed on the drainage system at the frontage of the Sunyani High Court, the unusually heavy vehicular traffic, has contributed to the problem. He apologised when the Bono Regional Minister, Madam Justina OwusuBanahane, inspected work on the project.
According to Mr Friar, the main distribution lines of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) were buried on the site, and it took some time for the GWCL to relocate those pipelines, contributing to the delay.
Madam Owusu-Banahene told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) her visit followed a directive she gave to the contractor and expressed satisfaction at the progress of work so far. She however impressed on the contractor to complete some minor works and finish the project as soon as possible and hand it over before leaving the site.
Madam Owusu-Banahene expressed the readiness of the Bono Regional Coordinating Council’s (RCC) to ensure contracts are awarded to local firms, so as to boost the local economy, and urged contractors to do excellent work and guard against shoddy works.
In August last year, the delay of work the drainage system project attracted the displeasure of the Sunyani Traditional Council (STC), drivers, motorists and pedestrians
Construction works on the project caused unusual heavy vehicular traffic jams in the Central Business District (CBD) of the town.Earlier in May authorities in Sunyani barricaded a portion of the principal street of the capital, around the High Court for the work to commence on the project
The STC stated at the time that it was dissatisfied with the progress of work done so far, and called on the contractor to expedite action or face the anger of the chiefs.Nana Kwaku Sarbeng, the Akwamuhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, who addressed the media at the time, observed the delay had created nuisance in the township.
He lauded the government’s intention to expand the drainage systems and uplift the image of the city, but regretted progress of work on the project showed “incapability” of the contractor to finish the work as scheduled.
Nana Sarbeng said it was disheartening that the STC knew nothing about the contract, and called on the project supervisors to do diligent work and ensure that the project was completed within the scheduled period to address the mess it had caused in the township.
