Veteran journalist Razak El-Alawa has joined his ancestors. According to Alhaji M.N.D. Jawula, a retired Chief Director and a close associate of the deceased, Alhaji El-Alawa was pronounced dead in Accra on Monday, May 3. He is believed to have lived for 78 years.
The body was taken to Kumasi, where his family lives and was scheduled to have been buried yesterday, according to Muslim rites.
The late Alhaji El-Alawa was the Northern Regional correspondent of the state-run Daily Graphic for a very long time, before being transferred to the head office in Accra, where he joined the front-line staff.
One of the most prolific writers in the history of Ghanaian journalism, AlhajiRazak El-Alawa won the United African Company-sponsored ‘Journalist of the Year’ three times in a row.
In September 1979, when the People’s National Party (PNP) of the late President HillaLimann was sworn into office to administer this nation, Alhaji El-Alawa was appointed Press Secretary to the President.
The late Alhaji El-Alawa would be remembered in the north particularly, as the man who used his pen to promote the cause of Real Tamale United when the Pride of the North burst unto the first division football scene with a bang.
Born in Kumasi, he was educated at the KonongoOdumasi Secondary School and the University of Ghana.
At Legon, Mr. El-Alawa resided at the Commonwealth Hall and spent his entire adult life promoting the activities of the Vandals as well as KOSS.
At the office of The Chronicle, General Manager EboQuansah described the late Razak as a media colossus and the vacuum which his death has created would be difficult to fill.
AlhajiRazak El-Alawa was a colossus in the media space in this country.
“He was one of the few newsmen in Ghana who combined mainstream news reporting and sports journalism with proficiency.
“May Allah, the Ever Merciful have mercy on his soul,” Mr. Quansah prayed.
In a related development, the death is reported of a former Ghana News Agency Western Regional Manager, Mr Godfrey K. Nyanney, at the Takoradi Hospital(European Hospital) on Sunday May 2, 2021.He was 78.
Mr Nyanney worked at the Ghana News Agency (GNA) Head office in Accra, AgonaSwedru and Winneba in the Central Region and was later transferred to Takoradi in the Western Region. He became the Regional Manager for the Agency in the Western Region until he went on retirement.
After retiring from the Agency, he worked as the Regional Correspondent for New Times Corporation (NTC) in the Western Region.
Mr Nyanney was also the Western Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for three consecutive times.Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
