Suspected armed robbers, numbering about six and riding motorbikes, squeezed the life out of a 61 year old man on Monday, this week, after he ordered his wife not to surrender her bag containing unspecified amount of money that they had withdrawn from a local bank.
The deceased, Charles Korankye and his wife, Monica Korankye, who had just reportedly returned from Switzerland, had gone to the bank to withdraw money, but unknown to them the six robbers were trailing them.
On reaching Amanful, a suburb of Takoradi, which is in the heart of the City, the robbers accosted the couple and ordered the woman, who was holding the money, to surrender it.
Mr Korankye, however, resisted the robbers and before his wife could realise, one of the robbers had fired straight into the chest of the Swiss returnee.
They then snatched the hand bag containing the money and fled the densely populated area, amidst firing of warning shots. The Chronicle gathered that though there were a number of people in the area, none of them went to the aid of the couple, because of the sporadic manner the robbers were firing.
After the armed robbers left the scene, some good Samaritans went to the aid of the couple and rushed them to the hospital, but the man was pronounced dead on arrival.
The wife, Monica Korankye, who sustained injuries, was treated at the same hospital.
This is the third time within a month that such gruesome armed robbery has occurred in Takoradi. In the previous incidents, mobile money dealers were robbed at gun points.
The regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSP Olivia Adiku, has confirmed to the media the death of Mr Korankye.
The regional police command, The Chronicle understands, will hold a news conference today to throw more light on the development.
