The Goaso Nursing and Midwifery Training College, with the view of training professional midwives to curtail the high incidence of maternal mortality in the locality, has launched the 10th Anniversary of its establishment in December 2010.
The ceremony, which took place last week Friday, coincided with the 10th and 11th Matriculation of students, which were delayed because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
The Principal, Samuel Ansu Frimpong, said a total of 477 out of 1,055 applicants (representing 45%) were given admission in 2020.
He said 168, comprising 63 males and 105 females, were admitted into the General Nursing programme, while 208 were admitted into the Registered Midwifery programme, with 70 into the post (NAP/NAC Midwifery programme.
The Principal said the current student population stood at 977, out of which 143 are male and 834 female. He stated that management was working assiduously to complete a five-unit two-storey lecture block with its Internally Generated Funds.
Mr. Ansu Frimpong commended the Member of Parliament for the area and the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly for completing the ground floor of the new female hostel, and appealed to them for the completion of the first floor as well.
He stressed the importance of stakeholders in the development of the school, and thanked them for the support so far, particularly, the fencing of the school compound to improve upon security on campus.
Principal Ansu Frimpong appealed to the Ministry of Health (MoH), stakeholders, associations and benevolent organisations to assist in the acquisition of a school bus to replace the old one, which experiences frequent breakdowns.
He also pleaded with the MoH to post more nursing and midwifery tutors to the school to reduce the work load of the few at post. He also advised the students to take advantage of the friendly academic environment and take their theoretical and practical training seriously to acquire quality training in the pursuit of their calling, which requires patience, sacrifice and selflessness.
