“Education is our right, for in it our future is bright”, was a stanza contained in the poem of 12 year old Asabea Racheal, a primary 6 pupil of the Nkwakubew Presbyterian School in the Eastern Region.
Indeed, the Volta River Authority (VRA) agrees with little Racheal that education is one of the ways pupils in a deprived community like Nkwakubiw, in the Asuogyaman district, can escape poverty in future.
For this reason, the Authority, as part of activities marking its 60th anniversary, had a Special Drone Delivery Donation of Educational and Covid-19 Materials to the school.
The items comprised of VRA’s 60th Anniversary branded school bags, exercise books, maths sets, pens, pencils, water bottles, face masks and sanitisers, which were all delivered by a drone.
The VRA said its goal is to ensure that everyone in the classroom is equipped with the fundamental tools to thrive in their academic lives. It is also to support families and schools in the provision of such items.
In a short ceremony held to handover the items to the school, the Chief Executive Officer of VRA, Mr Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa expressed his outfit’s delight in celebrating such a milestone with the pupils.
“As we celebrate 60 years of VRA’s existence, it is important for us to share a special day with our beautiful and talented young school children who hold the key to the future of our great nation, Ghana,” he said.
He said the donation was the Authority’s way of motivating the children to aim high in education in order for them to grow up as responsible citizens of the country and contribute their quota towards nation building.
“The pupils we see today are the nation’s ‘great minds’, so children, I urge you to take your education seriously so that tomorrow your parents and the nation will be proud of you,”Mr Antwi Darkwa told the gathering.
Touching on the use of drone for the delivery of some of the items, Mr Antwi- Dankwa said it was to demonstrate to the pupils who probably have little knowledge about technology, about the power of technology and encourage them to use every opportunity they get to acquaint themselves with new forms of technology.
As Covid-19 lingers on, Mr Antwi- Dankwa advised the students to observe the Covid-19 protocols to prevent catching the disease.
“Today, the Covid-19 pandemic has seriously affected the traditional way of learning and the entire academiccalendar. Clearly, we are not in normal times and so let us all, children and adults, adhere strictly to the health and safety protocols that we have all been advised to follow.
It is in the light of this that our package to every child include; Covid-19 preventive items such as face masks and hand sanitizers”, he sdaid.
He urged the children to continue to wear the face masks regularly, wash their hands with soap under running water, use handsanitisers where there is no running water, cover their mouths when coughing, cover their noses when sneezing, avoid hand-shaking and also remember to observe social distancing.
He said Ghana and their individual families need them alive and safe to build a prosperous nation and a fruitful future.
Aside the VRA, pupils and teachers of Nkwakubew, the District Chief Executive, District Directors of Education and Health and some Traditional leaders were also at the ceremony.
Addressing the people, the Director of Education, Asuogyaman District, Madam Theodora Kutourkor Anti indicated that the directorate was very grateful for the constant support they receive from VRA.
She was emphatic that the district had not been exempted from the educational benefits that VRA provides for schools in its catchment areas.
The District Chief Executive for Asuaogyaman, Mr Samuel Kwame Agyekum saidhe is happy whenever he is called upon to participate in things that border on education.
He said education is one of the means through which the most insignificantthings of society become prominent, hence his excitement.
He affirmed that the VRA had been supportive and helpful in the economic and educational lives of the district and prayed that the Authority will do more for the district in the years ahead.
“I am optimistic that 60 years will help you to improve upon your services for us.”
The representative from the District Health Directorate, Nana Konadu Agyemang, on her part, advised the school to put the items to good use.She also advised them to observe the Covid-19 protocols.
Meanwhile, Nkwakubewis not the only school that benefitted from VRA’s Corporate Social Responsibility.
Twenty-Nine more basic schools in VRA’s impacted communities across the country are expected to benefit from this gesture.
In all 16,000 school children in the Eastern, Volta, Western, Bono East and Greater Accra regions will all benefit from VRA’s benevolence.
