The state’s fifth prosecution witness (PW5), Zuwera Issaka, has testified before an Accra High Court that she did not hear the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adam Mahama, mentioning the names of those who poured acid on him at his residence, or while being transported to the hospital.
Madam Zuwera, who was part of the three people who sent the late Adam Mahama to the Bolgatanga Government Hospital, whose testimony is contrary to what the court was earlier made to believe – that the deceased mentioned the names while being sent to the hospital after his horrible experience of an acid bath.
According to Madam Zuwera, the decease did not recite Quaranic verses and at the same time mentioning his offenders’ names as being Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi, but was crying out “I will die.”
In her evidence-in-chief to the court, presided over by Justice Mrs Merlyn Wood, on Wednesday, she said after urging the deceased to have faith, they said Muslim prayers.
She also told the court that the only instance that the deceased mentioned the names of the accused persons, Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi, was at the hospital’s Emergency Ward.
Madam Zuwera added that the deceased first mentioned the accused persons names, and after requesting to speaking to his wife, and openly said to the hearing of others those who poured the acid on him on that fateful day of May 20, 2015.
The witness also told the court that when she got to the scene, the deceased was rolling on the group and wailing, but earlier evidence by Asigiri Quinn (PW2) indicated that he was moving up and down wailing.
She described the deceased predicament as likened to hot water poured on him from his chest area to the abdomen.
The witness further added that while at the hospital, the doctors and nurses put him on drip him at the Emergency Ward before being taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The police later arrived at the hospital to carry out some work and later conveyed all of them to the deceased’s residence to examine his vehicle, which on their arrivals had the headlight on while a white gallon was lying on the compound as well.
For emphasis, the defence counsel for Asanke, Lawyer Andrews Vortia, during cross examination asked the witness whether it was only prayers that were said between her and the deceased, to which she relied yes.
Q. So will you agreed with me that there was no conversation in between the prayers?
A. Yes, it was only prayers.
Q. So during the prayers, did the deceased mention the names of Gregory Afoko and Asabke?
A. No.
Q. Would you be so much annoyed to note that in between the prayers, Quinn had told this court the deceased was mentioning the names of Gregory Afoko and Asabke?
A. I did not hear their names as a result of the prayers.
