Heavy rains which poured late evening of Tuesday have exposed the shoddy work of the Brazilian contractor, CONTRACTA, that constructed the new Kejetia Market.
The situation has come to confirm the earlier complaints of the various trader associations at the Kejetia market.
Yesterday, traders busied themselves clearing the mess caused by the rains the previous day to the discomfort of patrons as most of the spaces were flooded from leakages from all directions.
Leakages at the market have been cited as a major challenge which has still not been resolved as a result of which , the traders have had to adapt to waiting for about three hours anytime it rains before they can open their shops for the day’s work.
“We have called on KMA as managers of the facility and the contractors severally to fix the situation but all to no avail”, the traders complained.
During a visit to the scene by The Chronicle yesterday, the shop owners at the new Kejetia market complained that the Kumasi metropolitan assembly (KMA) or city authorities had done nothing to resolve their plight.
According to Madam Mary Owusu, Juliana Agyapong Nana Poku, and Maame Serwaah, aka Maame Broni, they incur further cost of between GH¢80.00 and GH¢90.00 – addressing the situation on their own yet they have been neglected.
The trading groups, including Kejetia Traders Association, Eleven-member steering committee of Central market, Concerned Central market Traders association, Kejetia/Central market Petty Traders associations, Francos Enterprise limited and the Kejetia Traditional Caterers Association had previously frowned on the state of the facility handed over to the government.
The traders have also drawn the attention of the contractor and all those connected to the project.
They reported the final delivery in the face of persistence of major issues and concerns without any effort by the contractor, consultant and major stakeholders to address them is a major source of worry.
They have consequently asked the contractor and managers of the facility to address all their concerns by correcting identified faults.
The traders said they would be compelled to embark on massive protests if their concerns are left unattended to as soon as possible.
