A father who lost his children in an inferno that gutted his home is pleading with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and Tema Regional Police Command to furnish him with the report of the cause of the fire.
The report, Seth Somefi told The Chronicle, would guide him and others to be wary of domestic fires.
“Since the day of the incident when the GNFS and police came to take videos and pictures and told me that they would conduct investigations into the cause of the fire, I’ve not heard from either of them again,” Seth Somefi told The Chronicle at his temporary home at Baatsona, where the Volta Diaspora Caucus, led by its National Coordinator, Dzifa Aku Attivor, visited him and his wife to present some cash, food items and clothes them.
The victims are of the Volta region descent, therefore, when news got to the Caucus, they pooled resources from both home and abroad to, at least, assuage the pain and loss of the victims.
At the presentation on Tuesday, DzifaAttivor explained that the Caucus received the tragedy with deep shock, especially when the family lost everything to the fire.
“Losing four children to fire is not something one can easily forget. It is painful and so the association is here to show solidarity and love to our own.”
The Caucus, in addition to some undisclosed cash they presented to help the bereaved family start some trade, topped up with assorted food items.
She appealed for the benevolence of other generous Ghanaians to assist the bereaved family keep hopes alive.
Lydia Angel Nutakor, popularly known as ‘Lydia Double Double’, who is the Greater Accra Regional Volta Diaspora Caucus Chairperson, was glad her National Coordinator was able to rally financial support for the victims who live in her region.
“This is a young couple who has lost their children and we trust God for better times for them. Because they lost everything to the fire outbreak, we appeal for more support for the family,” she added.
Seth Somefi, the bereaved father, thanked the Volta Diaspora Caucaus for their generosity.
Lastly, he thanked the Covenant Temple of the Spintex branch of Assemblies of God Church, where he fellowships, for their immense support to him and his family since the catastrophe struck them.
Background
At about 9.30pm of December 3, last year, fire ravaged a wooden structure at Baatsona, burning four children beyond recognition.
The children were deeply asleep in the structure when it went up in flames.Three of the deceased were Seth Somefi’s children and the other was the child of his brother-in-law, who had visited him and his wife ahead of the Christmas festivity.
The wife of Seth Somefi is a market woman and she was on her way home when she received a distress call that her home was on fire, but by the time she would arrive home, the fire had devastated all their properties and four children.
Seth Somefi and the wife could not tell whether or not the fire was as a result of electrical fault, “and it is for this reason that I need the GNFS and police to let me know what caused the fire so that I would be more careful now than I was.”
The ages of the children were from four to 11 years.
