Water and Sanitation for Urban Poor (WSUP), a UK Non-Governmental Organisation, in collaboration with Unilever and Hygiene Behaviour Change Coalition, has donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in the fight against the coronavirus in the Metropolis.
The Water and Sanitation for Urban Poor, among its core mandate, provides assistance to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and Ghana Water Company Limited in the promotion on hygiene in households in under-privileged communities.
The NGO presented items like Veronica buckets, water basins, 44 boxes of alcohol-based hand sanitisers, face masks, Lifebuoy soaps, water tanks, nose masks and hand gloves to the KMA for distribution to various markets and health facilities in a bid to contain the spread of the disease.
Mr. Anthony Addai, Project Manager for the Coronavirus Response Project, who presented the items on behalf of the NGO, hoped the KMA would, as always, champion the cause of good hygiene in the fight against COVID-19 in the markets and health facilities.
Mr. Addai stressed the need for members of the public to continue to strictly adhere to all the safety protocols outlined by the Ghana Health Service to help curb the resurgence of the virus.
He said the Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor was concerned about the gradual rise in the number of cases in the country, and thus, decided to provide the PPE to help fight the spread of the virus.
The Mayor of Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi, commended the NGO collaborating with the KMA in promoting households in poor communities in the Kumasi Metropolis over the past six years.
He said WSUP had supported the assembly to construct toilet facilities in many communities in the Metropolis
The Chief Executive of the KMA expressed gratitude to the WSUP for its continued support, and promised to distribute the items to the KMA Clinic, health facilities, and various markets within the Kumasi Metropolis to help fight against the COVID-19.
Mr. Osei Assibey appealed to members of the public, who had been vaccinated, to continue to adhere to the safety protocols to stay safe.
The KMA boss said he would partner with the media to educate the public on the need to observe all the COVID-19 protocols.
