Heavy duty trucks carting bauxite and manganese appear to be doing more harm than good to the region. Apart from destroying our roads, particularly that of Tarkwa Agona Nkwanta-Takoradi, due to the weight of the loads they carry, they are also now destroying bridges.
A clear case is how a heavy duty truck carting a heavy volume of load collapsed a bridge linking the people of Wassa Afransie, the hometown of the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Cocoboard, Joseph Boahene Aidoo.
The collapse is said to have led to the death of one person in the process.
For now, the people of Wassa Afransie have been cut from the rest of the adjoining communities, particularly Wassa Akropong.
Wassa Afransie is a mining community through which heavy duty trucks carrying manganese and bauxite daily pass.
How the only bridge that links the Wassa Afransie community to the rest of the adjoining towns was approved for use by heavy duty trucks remains puzzling.
For now, until the bridge is put into shape, there is no route the people of Wassa Afransie could use to access the adjoining communities, particularly the capital of Wassa East, Wassa Akropong.
