The Nyinahin Police in the Atwima Mponua District of Ashanti have launched a full scale investigation into the alleged murder of a teenage boy and his sister at Asepaye, near Nyinahin.
The deceased, Nelson Osei, 17, a former student of Ofoase Royal International School and Anita Adu, 14, all of Asepaye, have since been released by the Nyinahin Police to the family for burial, after autopsy at the KomfoAnokye Teaching hospital in Kumasi.
According to preliminary medical reports, the two were tortured and strangled in the neck, before their bodies were dumped in an abandoned galamsey pit at Asepaye, contrary to initial belief by residents that they were drowned.
Reverend Joseph Osei, uncle of the deceased, confirmed that the medical results clearly indicated that the two died of torture and strangulation before being dumped into the pit, and that ritual murder cannot be ruled out.
Four suspects who were initially picked to assist in police investigations had been granted bail.
He said Nelson, who was awaiting his results after graduating from Ofoase International School, had visited his grandmother at Asepaye, where his sister was also schooling.
He said the family was shocked to hear from Asepaye on January 4, 2021 that Nelson and Anita had been found dead in an abandoned galamsey pit.
Rev. Osei said the family became suspicious when the bodies of the deceased were removed from the pit to the community before the police arrived at Asepaye to take the bodies for post-mortem examination to be conducted.
The family has appealed to the Ashanti Regional police command to take up the matter for impartial investigations.
