The Bono Regional Directorate of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has out-doored new uniforms for Community Police Assistants (CPA) drawn from the Sunyani Municipality at a special parade.
The beneficiaries have been assigned to the YEA Bono Regional Office, Sunyani Municipal Office, Sunyani Municipal Police Command, Bono Regional Police Command and other offices in Sunyani.
The Bono Regional Director for the YEA, Mr. Shadrach Abrefa Mensah, who out-doored the new uniforms, thanked the Chief Executive Officer, Lawyer Justin Kodua Frimpong, and management of the agency for the support, and encouraged the CPA beneficiaries to give off their best for the growth and development of the region, and country at large.
In 2018, 9,000 community policing assistants were deployed to assist the police in the fight against crime in the various communities.
The Sunyani Municipal Director for the YEA, Mr Ibn Ahmed, told The Chronicle that from 2018 to 2021, 90 CPAs have been deployed in the municipality.
The personnel, who were recruited by the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), were drawn from the various electoral areas and taken through six weeks training at the national and regional police training schools.
The then Director General of the Patrols Unit and Community Policing of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Yaagi Akuriba, said at the time that the move formed part of the transformational agenda of the Service which, among other things, had devolved community policing to the electoral areas.
He said at the time that the idea was to enable the community policing assistants to be visible and accessible in their communities, so that people who were in distress could quickly contact them for immediate or prompt assistance.
He also said at the time that the police had taken the fight against crime and other social vices to the communities where the criminals lived and had been operating, to enable community members get involved in their own security.
Mr Akuriba said the transformational programme was designed to build a world-class police service, capable of dealing with traditional and emerging crimes.
The transformational programme thrives on five key thematic areas – welfare and professional development of officers, community policing, criminal investigation, monitoring and international affairs, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
The Director General said at the time that in all, the police were to recruit and train 36,000 community policing assistants, in collaboration with the YEA, but due to circumstances beyond their control, they had to settle on 15,000 at the time, saying the number would be increased in subsequent years.
