The Majority Caucus in Parliament says their colleagues in the Minority intend to frustrate the government by obstructing its businesses. According to the Caucus, the conduct of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wing in the House doesn’t look like it is programmed to work in the larger interest of the country.
“They are out to frustrate government business. They have an obstructionist agenda,” the Deputy Leader of the Majority Caucus, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, lamented to the media in Parliament yesterday.
His concerns come in the wake of developments in the House on Tuesday, in relation to the composition of the Appointments and Business Committees.
On the Appointments Committee, Mr Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, argued on Tuesday that their caucus was in a disadvantaged position, owing to the fact that the 26 membership works out to 13 each on both sides.
He feared that should there be a tie, the Chairman of the Committee, which comes from their side, may not be able to cast a vote, which would give the NDC group an advantage over them.
His fears were also based on a Facebook post by a member of the Appointments Committee and MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who described the composition as “interesting”.
Mr Ablakwa wrote: “Remember Standing Order 172(8) stipulates that a candidate who fails to secure 50 per cent of the votes cast is rejected.”
“Instructive to note that Order 211(5) forbids the Chairman from having an original vote. May the supreme national interest, respect for our laws and good conscience guide us all,” Mr Ablakwa added, and wished prospective ministerial nominees the best of luck.”
This post, Mr Afenyo-Markin said, exposes the intention of the NDC Caucus going into the imminent sitting of the Appointments Committee.
